Ink and bleach

This week I have explored using procein dye ink and bleach to draw with. I found that this encouraged me to move away from monochrome. I found that looking at Barbara Rae's work helped me to work more freely with colour to create lively and vibrant work. I wanted to make the block colour work as a composition that related to the motif of 'text'.

To edit and select the way formatted the composition I zoomed In on letters to abstract them. I did this by bleaching out areas on the ink. This distorted the ink and made the colour fade to a more vibrant acidy version of the colour it was before. This portrays my theme of how we are influenced by advertising and media. The abstraction of the letters reflects that you don't see advertisement for it real motive.

My visual research then needed to be portrayed through my choices of yarns to weave with. I did yarn wrappings to visualise the textures of the yarn when combined in a block. This also helped me to proportion my work into composition ideas.

Exploring Data

For my project I want to explore 'Data' in terns of advertisement as it is something we are bombarded with constantly. I found that old match boxes with advertisements on my visually pleasing as the images on them are of a muted pallet, which is a way I like to use colour. I developed the match box advertisements and created my own match boxes. I think that little boxes are an interesting way of representing data because in this case the box it's self is the data rather than holding it.

Sir Peter Blake
Peter Blake's work is bases on popular culture which is why his work fits well to the data theme. It supports the theme because of the way he has cropped well know advertisements. The way they have been cropped supports my theme that we are so bombared by the media advertisement that we often only need a snippet of colour or font and we are contextually aware of the brand that it depicts.

Mapping Spaces

I visited the 'Museum of Industrial Science' because of the interesting machinery they have on to display. I enjoy drawing machine structures especially if they are old, I find that they suit a heavy drawing style. When approaching the drawing compositions I decided to Draw things as they were moving to get a gestural style of drawing.  I also zoomed in on area of air crafts so that they couldn't be recognised as air crafts any longer.

On my walk home I took photos of the road signs that directed me home. I then arranged the symbols into compositions to draw.
